Great weather for a change and some tasty music to get the weekend going!

This was a fun morning with Manu Boyd. Many in the community know him as the leader of the music group Ho’okena with their solid male harmonies, others know him as the kumu for Halau o ke A’ali’I ku Makani, others have known him though his long work with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs or as a commentator for Merry Monarch and Kamehameha Schools Song Contest broadcasts on television. The Scholarships of the Ke Ali`I Pauahi Foundation and a discussion on the upcoming Kamehameha Schools Song Contest – 14 Mar. 2009

A whipping wind and lots of rain only made it cozier around the old kitchen table with two friends from Ke Ali’i Pauahi Foundation, Executive Director Kalei Stern and Scholarship Administrator Bran-Dee Torres. Applications are available now for over a hundred scholarships to fund higher education and vocational training and candidates need not be Kamehameha graduates to apply. Bran-Dee told us there’s only one application form for all scholarships, though other materials may be required. Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts President Ku’uipo Kumukahi – 7 Mar. 2009

This is one Saturday where we really would have loved to have all of you with us around the old kitchen table for the laughing and straight talking that went on behind the scenes. Na `Oiwi TV – 28 Feb. 2009

We kept the music flowing on a cool and windy Saturday with Na’alehu Anthony, the CEO of the brand new ‘Oiwi TV channel. A filmmaker and producer, Na’alehu unveiled the variety of programs that will be available on demand for Oceanic Time Warner’s digital cable subscribers on channel 326. Keiki programming, a recipe series, a documentary on sustainability, and other programs will be offered along along with films and videos about Hawaiian culture, politics, history, and more. Further discussion on the potential sale of ceded lands – 21 Feb. 2009

We kept the music upbeat and positive for this Saturday morning with the U.S. Supreme Court due to hear a case of extreme importance to Hawaiians on February 25th. The Lingle Administration is appealing the Hawai’i Supreme Court’s ruling that former Kingdom Government and Ali’i lands that have been held in trust by the State may not be sold until a settlement is reached with Native Hawaiians. Office of Hawaiian Affairs Administator Clyde Namu’o made it clear that OHA opposes the State’s appeal and urgently requests that it be dropped. He emphasized that the rationale for such a move on the part of the Lingle Administration has never been adequately explained.

The Bishop Museum – 14 Feb. 2009

We could have taken the whole two hours talking about Kaho’onei behind his back while he was at statewide briefings on Hawaiian legislative issues. A lot of people know he was the first UH student on the Board of Regents and about his work with ‘Iio’ulaokalani but he had some colorful years in Las Vegas before that. Ah, maybe another time. We got right into the music for this windy Saturday and actually wish we had more time with our guest Noelle Kahanu, a Project Manager in the Education Department at Bishop Museum. [Read more]

One thing about our Saturday morning get togethers, we manage to catch some of this State’s movers and shakers in the kind of relaxed mode where we can really get to know them. In this case, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs’ Hawai’I island trustee, Robert Lindsey was our very special guest. His long experience with land management and community issues on Hawai’i island gives him an invaluable perspective which he shared with us on issues like healthcare, protecting natural and cultural resources, and Mauna Kea.

The Lunalilo Home Benefit Luau – 31 Jan. 2009

Hope you were one of the lucky ones who made it to the Lunalilo Home benefit luau this Saturday—kalua pig, laulau and squid luau! Plus raw crab and more, plus Holunape and Ku’uipo Kumukahi. This luau sells out every year so plan ahead for the last Saturday in January next year. It’s a celebration of King William Charles Lunalilo’s birthday. Lunalilo Trust trustee, Harvey McInerny told us about the history of this Ali’I trust which once sported 400 thousand acres of land, and is now down to 5 acres in Hawai’I Kai. Still, support is strong for the trust’s mission of providing care for elderly Hawaiians, and now, other members of the community. [Read more]

Interview with Dr. Lynette Cruz – 24 Jan. 2009

Another great Saturday to be together, still feeling the glow from DC. Vickie was still up there partying so we hustled up some great music for a party of our own with a soulful sister, educator and activist, Dr.Lynette Cruz. What is an activist in Hawai’i today? Lynette says Kumu John Ka’imikaua taught that it is someone who consults their gut feeling for what is right and acts upon it. Lynette says after years in the struggle, Hawaiian sovereignty is not an isolated issue, but is part of a whole social fabric of justice regarding homelessness, healthcare, incarceration, education, every part of our community lives. Our solution to every issue, according to Lynette, should not only be rational, fair, and legal, it must meet the criteria of feeling right, or pono. [Read more]

Kamehameha Schools Distance Learning – 17 Jan. 2009

It’s always great to hear about something that’s convenient, educational, and fun. This week, we found out that Kamehameha Schools’ Distance Learning opportunities are all of that and the price is right, too! ‘Ike Hawai’I, (http://ksdl.ksbe.edu/ikehawaii/application.html, online learning for teens) and A’o Makua, (http://ksdl.ksbe.edu/adult/registration.html, online classes for adults and family) are a user friendly way to learn Hawaiian language, culture and history, according to Pilipo Arnold, who shared what the adult classes have done for him. KS Distance Learning Manager, Kelly Dukelow, even gave Na Kai ‘Ewalu listeners a special code: radio09, good for 60% off A’o Makua classes. That brings the cost to ten dollars a class! Chad Lovell, communications specialist for KS told us a new, Malama ‘Aina class begins in March.
