What a great day of music and talk story! Cha Thompson is still classy, savvy and beautiful after over thirty years shaping the vision of Hawai’i that visitors take home with them. Cha and her husband Jack joined forces in the ’60s to form Tihati Productions, Hawai’i’s largest and longest running entertainment company. Most recently, she and her crew staged the first ever White House luau for President Obama. She’s got stories to tell! And, with Jack, is still very involved in family and community projects. Check out www.tihati.com to find out more or even book their services for your own party.

What a great Saturday morning, there was a nice breeze going and just a little rain to cool things off. Perfect conditions for the 32nd annual Prince Lot Hula Festival at Moanalua Gardens. Alika Jamile, president of the board of the Moanalua Garden Foundation, shared some of the history and work the foundation has been involved in since their community outreach began in 1970. We knew everybody was shopping, cooking, getting the holiday parties together so we kept the music up front for this enjoyable Saturday together. Last year Kaho’onei was talking about how informative and well run the Native Hawaiian Convention was, so we did take the opportunity to let you know about it early this year. Scheduled for August 25-27 at the Hawai’i convention Center, this 8th annual convention is the brainchild of the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA). Robin Danner, founder, President and CEO of the CNHA was our guest at the kitchen table today. Reach them at www.hawaiiancouncil.org or call 808-596-8155 or toll free 800-709-2642.

This Saturday we were celebrating the music of this unique place on earth and talking about the Na Hoku Hanohano awards that happened last Tuesday. We talked with John Aeto, General Manager of Visionary Related Entertainment and member of the Hawai’i Academy of Recording Arts Board of Governors about HARA and the recording industry. Interesting, he outlined the history of live and recorded music in Hawai’i, drawing a parallel between the 1970’s and the present. All we know is, musicians need our support at their live performances, also, clubs and venues need our dollars to stay in business, and we need to purchase all the music we enjoy just to keep musicians going. We’re going to start charging to listen to Na Kai ‘Ewalu. Not! But we will do our part to keep you connected with the music of Hawai’i.

Wow this was a fun Saturday with summer in full swing. We had Kainoa Daines, Chair of the King Kamehameha Celebration Commission in to help us look ahead to the holiday. The 93rd Annual King Kamehameha Floral Parade is going to be incredible again this year because of the love and commitment behind every bit of it. Funding for Kamehameha Day events has been sketchy at best, still, Maui, Hawai’i island and Kaua’i are hanging tough with their commemorations. Mahalo and much aloha to all the participants in Lahaina, Hawi, Kea’au and on Kaua’i and O’ahu. Kainoa was saying that the commission is in a building phase, as are the sponsoring groups on Maui and in Hilo, as the young guard rises to their kuleana.
