Na Kai Ewalu – 3 Oct. 2009
October 15, 2009 by admin
Thank you so much for tuning in this past Saturday—the music felt just right for this full moon Saturday. One thing we learned from Vicky and our guest, Mehana Hind, is that there are 4 days of full moon per month in the Hawaiian calendar because they count the nearly full moons too. It was fun hearing the stories of Vicky’s days as a dancer in Waikiki with Mehana’s mother—colorful times! Mehana is carrying on the family tradition of dance, too, and just graduated from Auntie Leina’ala Heine Kalama’s halau. Mehana, who is the academic advisor for the Center for Hawaiian Studies, also shared some super educational opportunities, including scholarship information. She invites anyone interested in a UH education to give her a call at 947-0979.
Speaking of learning, Mehana chose this 'olelo no'eau for us: Na wai ho'i ka'ole o ke i ma'a i ka hele 'ia e o'u mau makua. That is translated as: "Why shouldn't I know, when it is a road often traveled by my parents." That was Liholiho's reply when someone praised his wisdom. The 'olelo gives credit to those who came before and paved the way.
