A mellow Saturday once again, as we welcomed Leinani Keppler-Bortles, First Vice-Regent of the Daughters of Hawaii to the kitchen table for a little tea and kukakuka. She shared history about the Daughters and their work caring for the Queen Emma summer Palace. Of course, this was in preparation for the annual Day at Queen Emma Summer Palace next Saturday. We’re all looking forward to the food, friends, arts, books, music, traditional crafts, and hula. Leinani mentioned a great vintage jewelry sale, too!
Kekuewa Kikiloi, Cultural Assets Manager for Kamehameha Schools, stopped by also to tell us about his recent trip to Mokumanamana, Necker Island in the Northwest Hawaiian Islands. The islands comprise the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument where underwater researchers have found over 7 thousand species, one quarter of which are found only in the Hawaiian archipelago. The thing is, you hardly hear about former human presence on the islands which is what Kekuewa was there to investigate. Check out this recording for some of his findings. With his background in anthropology and archaeology, Kekuewa, can hardly wait to get back!
