Na Kai Ewalu – 12 Sept. 2009

This day was a lot of fun because Kawika Trask is such a pro. Vicky got us ready for this by telling us he is one musician who knows how to make a living. He is respected for the depth and breadth of his musical knowledge, as a hula dancer’s accompanist who always knows the right tempo. Lots of tasty reminiscences and reflections on the music industry over the last thirty years or so. Then, the highlight of the morning, a live performance in the studio by the Kawika Trask Trio—Kawika with Keao Costa of Na Palapalai and Dwight Kanae who is probably best known from his days with the Peter Moon Band. Fabulous musicians who perform every Monday and Tuesday evening at the Royal Hawaiian Center and Fridays at the ‘Ilikai.
They performed a medley of Hapa Haole hits to whet our appetites for the Hapa Haole Hula and Music Festival at the Kapi’olani Bandstand today. The competition end of it happens next Friday, 5:30 at the Hale Koa Luau garden. Check www.hapahaolefest.org for all the scoops.
Kawika chose our ‘olelo no’eau today, Pala ka hala, momona ka Ha’uke’uke. When the pandanus fruit ripens, the ha?uke?uke sea urchinn is fat. Vickie and Kaho’onei saved the kaona on that one for after the show!
