Na Kai Ewalu – 18 July 2009

July 21, 2009 by admin

What a great Saturday morning, there was a nice breeze going and just a little rain to cool things off. Perfect conditions for the 32nd annual Prince Lot Hula Festival at Moanalua Gardens. Alika Jamile, president of the board of the Moanalua Garden Foundation, shared some of the history and work the foundation has been involved in since their community outreach began in 1970. After concentrating first on environmental issues, the foundation is moving toward a focus on culture, which will include relationships with the environment.

Pauline Worsham, marketing consultant for the MGF, gave us a colorful picture of this weekend’s events. It was especially eye opening to welcome Roddy Akau to the kitchen table. His family is the traditional caretaker for the Moanalua Valley area, and he gave us just a taste of the valley’s historical and cultural importance.

To find out more about this beautiful and significant area, check http://www.mgf-hawaii.org/index.html or call 839-5334.

Our ‘olelo no’eau for the week: Ho’ale’ale mānā i ke kaha o Kaunalewa, translated as, Mana ripples over the land of Kaunalewa, said of the movements of a dance. The gestures of the hand are compared to rippling water and lewa refers to movement of the hips.
