Na Kai Ewalu – 13 June 2009
June 20, 2009 by admin
This Saturday we were celebrating the music of this unique place on earth and talking about the Na Hoku Hanohano awards that happened last Tuesday. We talked with John Aeto, General Manager of Visionary Related Entertainment and member of the Hawai’i Academy of Recording Arts Board of Governors about HARA and the recording industry. Interesting, he outlined the history of live and recorded music in Hawai’i, drawing a parallel between the 1970’s and the present. All we know is, musicians need our support at their live performances, also, clubs and venues need our dollars to stay in business, and we need to purchase all the music we enjoy just to keep musicians going. We’re going to start charging to listen to Na Kai ‘Ewalu. Not! But we will do our part to keep you connected with the music of Hawai’i.
Na Hoku Hanohano Male Vocalist of the Year, Kaumaka’iwa Kanaka’ole joined us by phone andit was fun to get his fresh perspectives on his work, his kuleana, and the Grammys!
Our ‘olelo no’au was dedicated to the Hoku winners, “Pāpahi i ka hae o ka lanakila.” The ‘olelo means, ” Honor the flag of the victor,” said in praise of a victorious person.
