Maoli Arts Month – Wearable Arts Show – 30 May 2009
May 29, 2009 by admin
It was a voggy, muggy week, and we were missing Kaho’onei, but we made it to Saturday determined to have a good time! And we did with the help of our friends, Robert Cazimero and Maile Andrade. Robert came in with an armload of gardenias and sat with us stringing a lei to die for while he and Vickie gave behind the scenes scoops on the MAMO Wearable Arts Showcase. Robert directed the whole production which involved hula, chant, music, and gorgeous hula dancers modelling cutting edge fashion by Hawaiian designers.
It was great to have Maile on the program to talk about her work and unique processes like her “velvet burnout” fabrics. Nita Pilago, Nelson Makua, Nola and Linda Nahulu representing Bette Mu’u, Kealopiko, and Maile Andade were featured designers with jewelry by Marques Marzan, tattoo by Keone Nunes and fabulous flowers, hair and adornment by Harmony Brighter. The late feather master, Mary Lou Kekuewa was the special honoree at this year’s Showcase.
Mahalo to the students from Mapuana deSilva, Maelia Loebenstein, Robert, and Vickie’s halau for bringing the clothing to life. People buy the clothes right off the models’ bodies! If you want to see drop dead styling with tattoo, featherwork, lauhala, tapa, flowers, big hair, body paint, and 3 inch heels, high fashion with a Hawaiian sensibility, don’t miss the Wearable Arts Showcase next year.
Vickie’s ‘olelo no’eau this week was “Kulia i ka nu’u”, strive for the highest, and Maile contributed a beautiful interpretation especially for artists on this last weekend in Maoli Arts Month.
