Live From Bishop Museum with Mervina Cash-Ka’eo – 16 May 2009

We had a beautiful morning in the atrium of Hawaiian Hall for this edition of Na Kai ‘Ewalu! The Maoli Arts Month Exhibition of contemporary artists was a super treat, and just being so near all the Museum’s treasures was pretty inspiring for our little crew. Talk about inspiring, our guest was the President and CEO of Alu Like, Mervina Cash-Ka’eo. An attorney, her personal history of community service in the areas of health, education, legal services, social services, and more, including as a member of the Nanakuli-Ma’ili Neighborhood Board, shows what a committed person can do. Vickie and Kaho’onei also brought out how her family is a living example of service through the generations. She told us a great story about Pinky Thompson and the origins of Alu Like. Please check out www.alulike.org for opportunities in education, financial management, starting a small business, vocational training, and so much more through this, one of Hawai’i’s most successful community service providers.
The Hawai’i Book and Music Festival picked up right where we left off at 10am and we had Kawika Eyre stop by on his way to the Festival. Kawika is the author of a series of books for 4th graders tracing the life and times of Kamehameha. The books are all part of the Kana’iaupuni series and feature the artwork of ‘Imaikalani Kalahele who joined us to say that his work on the books has changed his view of “The Lonely One”. ‘Imai, who is also a trippy musician, also has an artwork in the contemporary art sho there in Hawaiian Hall. Check it out! For a look at the award winning books in the Kana’iaupuni series, check www.kamehamehapublishing.org.
