Kamehameha Scholars – 25 Apr. 2009
April 24, 2009 by admin
On this Saturday we kept the music coming as we focused on the future. Andrea Dias, the Director of Kamehameha Scholars came by to tell us about a program that reaches into the community outside of Kamehameha Schools to raise up new generations of Hawaiian leaders, and also offers financial help for higher education.
Ikaika Ka’ai’ai-Boner, a senior at Kapolei High School, is a member of the first graduating class that has taken part in Kamehameha Scholars. He came by with his mother, Dianne Boner, to give us an enthusiastic inside look at the program. Thank you so much, Ikaika and Diane for all the encouragement you gave to prospective Scholars. Andrea said the program is now expanding to Kaua’i, Maui and Hawai’i island, and 200 more scholars will be accepted this year. Check http://apps.ksbe.edu/kscholars for information and applications or call 534-8360 or toll free from the neighbor Islands, 800-842-4682. Mahalo, Andrea, for letting us know about this great opportunity. Deadline April 30th!
Vickie brought another super opportunity to the table: Ho’oulu 2009:Harvard Medical School Native American High School Summer Program. This is an amazing opportunity for Native Hawaiian students and teachers to study at Harvard Medical School this summer. The deadline for applications and materials is May 9th, so call 375-0847 or email kahai.pai@gmail.com for more information.
‘olelo no’eau: Ka lala kaukonakona haki’ole i ka pa a ka makani kona. The tough branch that does not break in the Kona gale—that is said of a sturdy, strong person. Vickie chose this ‘olelo no’eau for Ikaika and his fellow Kamehameha Scholars. Imua!
