Manu Boyd from the Royal Hawaiian Center – 21 Mar. 2009

March 27, 2009 by admin

Great weather for a change and some tasty music to get the weekend going!

This was a fun morning with Manu Boyd. Many in the community know him as the leader of the music group Ho’okena with their solid male harmonies, others know him as the kumu for Halau o ke A’ali’I ku Makani, others have known him though his long work with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs or as a commentator for Merry Monarch and Kamehameha Schools Song Contest broadcasts on television. This morning he sprang another accomplishment on us, actually he’s been the Cultural Director for the newly remodeled Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki for about a year. Manu explained the legendary history of the area, Helumoa, which is owned by Kamehameha Schools. The recent renovation has put Hawaiian culture first and foremost with live music almost every night along with cultural and historical displays and activities. Free parking with a validation from a restaurant or one of the eateries in the pa’ina lanai at least through the month of March.

‘olelo no’eau: Manu chose this as the ‘olelo no’eau for this week: “’A’ohe hana nui ke alu ‘ia”, No task is too great when we pull together. The task he had in mind this day was sustaining and spreading Hawaiian culture for the benefit of both visitors and our local communities.
