The Bishop Museum – 14 Feb. 2009
February 24, 2009 by admin
We could have taken the whole two hours talking about Kaho’onei behind his back while he was at statewide briefings on Hawaiian legislative issues. A lot of people know he was the first UH student on the Board of Regents and about his work with ‘Iio’ulaokalani but he had some colorful years in Las Vegas before that. Ah, maybe another time. We got right into the music for this windy Saturday and actually wish we had more time with our guest Noelle Kahanu, a Project Manager in the Education Department at Bishop Museum. Noelle shared the hopes and goals of Princess Bernice Pauahi and Charles Reed Bishop at the founding of the museum and some of the path the museum has traveled over the years. Part of Noelle’s kuleana at the Museum is Hawai’i Hall which she says is undergoing not a renovation, but a restoration that will lead to a more vibrant and accurate perception of both Hawaiian history and the present. We will have to have Noelle back for another of her special projects, Ma’oli Arts Month in May.Our mahalo to Representative Karen Awana, Kalaeloa to Ma’ili, who came in for a brief overview of Legislative actions on the ceded lands appeal going before the U.S. Supreme Court. That sets us up for next week’s focus on this issue.
‘olelo no’eau
Our ‘olelo no’eau in commemoration of the foresight and generosity of the founders and contributors to the Bishop Museum: I ulu no ka lālā i ke kumu. The branches grow because of the trunk. Without our ancestors, we would not be here.
