Discussion of issues facing Hawaii Island – 7 Feb. 2009
February 9, 2009 by admin
Lotta great music this Saturday and it’s really a pleasure for us to be turning you on to the sounds of these beautiful Islands. One thing about our Saturday morning get togethers, we manage to catch some of this State’s movers and shakers in the kind of relaxed mode where we can really get to know them. In this case, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs’ Hawai’I island trustee, Robert Lindsey was our very special guest. His long experience with land management and community issues on Hawai’i island gives him an invaluable perspective which he shared with us on issues like healthcare, protecting natural and cultural resources, and Mauna Kea.
‘olelo no’eau:
Trustee Lindsey hails from Waimea on Hawai’i island, so Vickie tailored our ‘olelo no’eau to honor the remarkable natural phenomena of his home. “Ka ua Kipu’upu’u o Waimea” honors the Kipu’upu’u rain of Waimea that is blown sideways in the wind. “Ka ua Paliloa o Waimea” is the particular rain of Waimea that sweeps down the cliffs. “Ke Kipu’upu’u ho’anu ‘ili o Waimea” refers to the rain that chills the skin of the people, and is one of the poetic names of Kamehameha’s warriors, comparing them to the wind and rain of this majestic area of Hawai’i. Hope hearing Robert Cazimero’s soaring rendition of “Waika” helped take you there!
