In the October 25th edition of Na Kai Ewalu we are joined by former legislator Annelle Amaral to discuss the positives and negatives of a Hawaii state constitutional convention and possible impact a convention may have on native Hawaiian issues. The decision to hold a Hawaii state constitutional convention will be on the November 4th election ballot. The last Hawaii state constitutional convention was in 1978.

The Queen’s Medical Center – 4 Oct. 2008

The October 4th edition of Na Kai `Ewalu explores another Ali`i Trust, The Queen’s Medical Center. Established in 1859 as a 100 or so bed dispensary which has grown into a 500 bed plus acute medical center. We are joined in the studio by Diane Palloma who is the Director of Native Hawaiian Health at Queen’s Medical Center and Dr Gerard Akaka, Senior Vice President of Queen’s Medical Center and the Medical Director for the Native Hawaiian Health department. Kaho`onei also recaps the 7th Annual Native Hawaiian convention and Vicky interviews musician Paul Shimamoto.

Aloha Festivals – 12 Sept. 2008

In the September 12th edition of Na Kai `Ewalu we spend the morning talking about Aloha Festivals. Aloha Week was established in 1946 as a cultural celebration of Hawaii’s music, dance and history intended to perpetuate our unique traditions. Aloha Week has grown in to Aloha Festivals encompassing over 100 events over 2-months on all the major Hawaiian Islands. We’ll talk about a few of the different events throughout the islands aa well as some of the challenges Aloha Festivals has faced over the years and continues to overcome today.

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs and economic development for native hawaiians – 30 Aug. 2008

In the August 30th edition of Na Kai `Ewalu, Noe Tanigawa and Kaho`onei Panoke are joined by Clyde Namu`o, Administrator of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. In this segment, we discuss a few areas of economic development for native Hawaiians currently worked on by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. We discuss the newly restructured Malama loan program allowing native Hawaiians easier access to an application for a business loan, home improvement loan or education loan. We also touch on the work of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs in gaining federal approval for OHA to become a Procurement and Technical Assistance Center which assists businesses with training and technical support for businesses wanting to bid on federal contacts.
